You Made It! Why is Your Motivation Gone?

Have you had the experience of achieving a goal that you had worked hard for, enjoyed the accomplishment, and then after a while you felt unmotivated or lost? Your productivity dropped and you are wondering where your motivation went. You were highly motivated a while ago. You might find yourself coasting along or even regressing. What happened?

You were motivated when you had a goal. Once you achieved your goal, there was no longer a need to be motivated because there isn’t anything to use that motivation on. Your goal was a compelling future to work towards. Your desire and commitment to achieving the goal created your motivation. In order to be motivated, you need a reason to be motivated. There needs to be something that you want and are committed to achieving.

Without goals to work towards, people stagnate or take steps backwards. Goals provide direction and something to focus on. Without a direction, there is nowhere to go so there is a feeling of being lost or unmotivated.

The solution is to create a new goal so that you have something to work towards again. If you want to maintain momentum and productivity, you have two options.

The first option is to create a new goal immediately after achieving your goal and enjoying your accomplishment. It may look like taking a break to celebrate your accomplishments for the year in the last week of December and then in January creating goals for the year.

The second option is creating the goals for the next year in October or November. When you are close to achieving your goal, create the next goal to pursue afterwards.

In order to maintain momentum and motivation, you need to keep creating goals and taking actions with purpose and commitment.
