Consciously achieving goals takes focus and dedication over time, which can be challenging. There needs to be consistent activity towards realizing the goal and it’s easy for us humans to be inconsistent. Some people are extremely disciplined, consistent, and reliable to the point where the rest of us wonder how they do it, or maybe they are secretly a robot. Most of us are disciplined and reliable sometimes or in some areas of our lives. We let our emotions such as fear, doubt, overwhelm, boredom, desire to be special, tiredness, and more to get in the way or distract us from achieving our goals. Life is busy and it can be easy to get taken off course to do something else that is also important. Sometimes we forget about our goals after we create them or abandon them after not working on them for a while. The outcome is that we become inconsistent. What can we do to stay motivated to achieve our goals?
The first step is to tell the truth to ourselves as to whether the goal that we create is truly something that we are committed to achieving or whether it is just something nice to have or a fantasy. Only you know the truth and it can take courage to admit it to yourself. The benefit of telling yourself the truth is that you will be free to focus on something that you are truly committed to. If you have stalled at working on your goal, one way to identify the truth is to ask yourself the following questions, in order from top to bottom:
1. Do I know what actions to take to achieve my goal?
If the answer is yes, move to the next question. If the answer is no, this is the obstacle and the next step is to find out what actions you should take to achieve your goal such as learning the process from someone who has done it before.
2. Do I know how to do the actions to achieve my goal?
If the answer is yes, move to the next question. If the answer is no, the next step is to learn how to do the actions such as reading books, watching tutorials, taking courses, and asking someone who has done it before.
3. Am I afraid to take the actions or am I afraid of the consequences of achieving my goal?
If the answer is no, move to number 4. If the answer is yes, the next step is to overcome the fear that is stopping you. Maybe there are too many uncertainties and you need to do more preparation so that you feel safe enough to take the actions. Maybe you need to break your goal or actions into smaller goals and actions that are easier for you to do. Maybe you need to get help from someone who has more experience and can guide you to avoid certain mistakes or pitfalls.
4. The last thing that may be stopping you:
If you have gone through 1 to 3 and have determined that you know what to do to achieve your goal, you know how to do it, and that you are not afraid of achieving your goal or any of the actions to achieve your goal, then there is no obstacle to achieving your goal except for one thing. The one thing that is stopping you is that you are not committed to achieving the goal at this time or maybe ever. Maybe it’s not what you truly want or maybe it’s not a priority for you right now. Maybe you created this goal for the wrong reasons such as to impress someone or because you thought that you should want this goal. It would be better for you to abandon this goal and to focus on a different goal that you are truly committed to achieving.
