Smart Goals vs Goal Coding Technology™

What is a Goal?

Life goals are what we want to achieve, and they're much more meaningful than just 'what we need to accomplish to survive'. Unlike daily routines or short-term objectives, they drive our behaviors over the long run.

A Goal:

  • Is something you want to accomplish

  • Has several steps

  • Gives purpose, confidence, and self esteem

  • Should be meaningful and reachable

Most of us are familiar with SMART Goals. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable (or Achievable), Realistic and Time-bound. Setting a SMART goal is simple: you aim for a long term goal that has completes within a specified period of time (such as 2 years from today), has a measurable outcome, makes sense for you to achieve (it’s realistic), you know it’s doable, it’s not pie-in-the-sky. By the pie-in-the sky I mean something that is not attainable in the specified period of time, for example if someone is trying to lose weight they cannot expect to wake up 40lbs lighter, that would not be realistic or attainable. So a SMART Goal may look like “Two years from today I will have $30,000 in my savings account.”

While SMART goals are fantastic and help to define your goals they do not provide the complete picture. That’s where the Goal Coding Technology™ comes in. The Goal Coding Technology™ (GCT™) is different from SMART goals. SMART goals only address the left side of your brain - that is the area of your brain that deals with the numbers, dates and concrete results, the right side of your brain is left out of SMART goals. The Goal Coding Technology™ takes a whole brain approach to creating and achieving your goal, whatever that goal may be! The Goal Coding Technology™ works at an experiential level - that utilizes the both sides of your brain!

Why is it important to engage the whole brain in order to achieve a goal?

While the measures and numbers are a great starting point, there is a more powerful aspect of your brain that helps you get to goals faster. Let's start by talking about the basic brain structure. The brain has two hemispheres - the left and right hemispheres (sides). The left side is the logical side that deals with numbers, science and data. The right side is the more creative side of the brain that deals with emotions, imagination and storytelling. When you use your imagination and tell a story, the subconscious part of your brain does not classify it as fiction, it’s the logical left side of your brain that does that. This aspect of your brain is a powerful tool that has been used for many decades to train athletes to be successful at their sport. The brain is able to imagine and focus and play a movie in the mind that it thinks it’s true.

So how does The Goal Coding Technology use both sides of the brain?

The Goal Coding Technology™ walks you through a process that uses your left brain by creating a specific measurable result that you want to achieve. Results such as reaching a certain weight by a certain time or having $30,000 in your savings account by the end of two years. And then uses a creative exercises that has you utilize the right side of your brain.

We have found that by engaging both sides of your brain you can achieve your goals not only faster but also with more satisfaction. This methodology works whether you are left brain dominant or right brain dominant.
