What is Balance? What People Really Want

We often hear about "work-life balance," and it's easy to picture it as some elusive ideal, a constant struggle between your career and your personal life. But what if it didn’t need to be a struggle at all? The pitfall that we tend to fall into is trying to achieve a vague sense of balance while different areas of life keep demanding more time and attention. Instead of striving for an elusive“balance” that hasn’t been defined specifically, we should allocate amounts of time to the activities that we choose to have in our lives. It’s like dividing a pie with slices of different sizes. We have 168 hours in a week and they can be allocated based on our goals and what areas of life need certain amounts of time. It's a conscious choice, a strategic allocation of your most valuable resources:

  • Time

  • Money

  • Energy

They should align with your purpose, goals, and commitments. It's all about protecting what's yours.

When you're clear on your goals, every activity you undertake should support and enable them, and your desired lifestyle. If it doesn't, it's simply a waste of your precious resources. This doesn't mean you have to be a workaholic. In fact, quite the opposite. Relaxation, hobbies, and time to yourself are absolutely crucial for your well-being, and they directly contribute to your ability to produce and achieve. Your well-being fuels your success.

Taking care of yourself (mentally, emotionally, and physically) isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for optimal performance.

  • Energy and productivity: When your body is fueled and rested, your energy levels soar, and so does your productivity.

  • Clear mind, laser focus: A well-rested and cared-for mind is a clear mind, allowing for focus and attention on what truly matters.

  • Emotional clarity, powerful mindset: Understanding and managing your emotions leads to a positive mindset, helping you project the right energy and approach every challenge with confidence.

  • Physical ability to execute: Your physical health is the foundation upon which all your achievements are built. Neglect it, and you'll find it harder to do what's needed to reach your goals..

Your most valuable resources: time and energy

You can't create more time, but you can optimize how you use it. Building a strong team and leveraging automation (software and robots) can significantly free up your time. Consistent routines can maximize your energy and productivity. Scheduling can help you manage your activities, routines, and how you spend your time.

Once you're clear on your purpose and goals, and you understand what you need to thrive, the next step is to schedule those activities and block off that time. Make it non-negotiable. This isn't about being rigid; it's about honoring your commitments to yourself and your aspirations. This is simple and not always easy to do. Do your best to stick to your commitments. It can help to have people who support you such as friends, family, colleagues, or coaches.

True balance isn't about perfectly splitting your time 50/50. It's about intentionally designing your life so that every moment and every effort contributes to the vision that you have for yourself. It's about protecting your resources and investing in your well-being, knowing that by doing so, you're not just achieving balance, you're achieving your goals.
